The Threat to the Municipality of Krushari
Local large-scale farmers and foreign investors planned to build one hundred wind turbines in the municipality of Krushari. These installations were expected to reach a height of three hundred meters. The project was described as experimental, since worldwide there is only one turbine of similar size, located in Sweden. Local residents expressed concerns about the potential harm wind turbines could cause to human health. This large-scale project was seen as a threat that could negatively transform the appearance of the entire municipality and the broader Dobruja region.
Unity of the Local Community
Residents of the Krushari municipality demonstrated active civic engagement and formed a united front against the investment proposal. Representatives from various groups joined the protests against the project:
- Farmers.
- Beekeepers.
- Teachers.
- Other local residents.
Protest Actions
Representatives of the “Velichie” party were present on site for nearly a month, supporting local people in their efforts. The organizers held public hearings during which the investor repeated prepared statements. Protesters responded with large-scale actions, bringing out fifty tractors that drove through the streets and around the territory of the municipality.
Cancellation of the Project
Farmers and local residents entered the municipal council building in large numbers. This strong public pressure influenced the institution’s final decision. The municipal council revoked its previous resolution approving the project. The decision ensured that investors would not build wind turbines in Krushari.
