Civil resistance against the mafia and institutional protection in Gurkovo: A fight for legality and justice – 31.01.2026

Numerous citizens gathered in the center of the town of Gurkovo. This settlement occupies a key position, as it is located at the entrance to the Republic Pass (Hainboaz). The police station building is large and imposing. More than 50 patrol cars and gendarmerie vans were present at the site. Law enforcement authorities are guarding the peaceful protesters instead of pursuing criminals. This contrast leaves a strong impression on those present. The state allocates enormous resources to protect a peaceful rally, while perpetrators of serious crimes remain at large.

Actions of the criminal group

Local residents point to specific individuals as the source of the tension. Marian and Georgi Tsonev, father and son, lead an organized group. They have old convictions for extortion and arson dating back to 2007. After 2019, they resumed their activities after buying votes in elections. The group attempts to seize businesses and impose control over the population. They use repression against anyone who opposes them. The group attacked Rashko Marenev and Dimitar Stoilov. Stoycho was shot in the back, with the bullet lodging near his spine. Video cameras recorded the beatings. Doctors and experts issued the necessary documentation for the injuries. Despite the evidence, the police did not detain the perpetrators.

Repression against businesses

State institutions apply a double standard. The authorities inspect honest entrepreneurs rather than bandits. Kolyo owns metal packaging factories in Germany, Italy, and Bulgaria. He creates jobs and restores old houses in the region. Pavel Stoimenov is also subjected to inspections by ten institutions. The police monitor whether he irrigates agricultural produce. At the same time, the criminal group operates freely. This pressure aims to subjugate economically independent people. Institutions use the state apparatus to repress citizens who take a stand.

Political responsibility and media silence

Speakers accuse Boyko Borisov and Delyan Peevski of the collapse of statehood. They claim that these figures create conditions for the existence of such groups. National television channels do not cover the events in Gurkovo. Citizens rely on social networks to disseminate information. The party “Velichie” and Ivelin Mihaylov support the protesters. Those present demand legality for all. They insist that the prosecution stop protecting criminals.

Civic ultimatum

People do not seek revenge, but justice. However, their patience is running out. If institutions fail to do their job, citizens will take action. Protesters threaten to block the Republic Pass and railway lines. They warn the authorities that blocking the country will expose the failure of governance. The goal is to create a strong civil society that controls the state. The mafia must understand that people will no longer allow themselves to be crushed. Citizens are determined to free municipalities one by one from criminal influence.
