1200 Years of Tradition: Volunteers from Europe Embark on a Spiritual Mission at Zograf Monastery – Yordan Mitsikulev

Обновена на 18.07.2026 - 23:11 от admin

Yordan Mitsikulev presents a diverse group of people traveling to Zograf Monastery on Mount Athos to continue the centuries-old tradition of unpaid labor and find inner peace.

The Essence of Harizanstvo and the Spiritual “Kelipir”

Men from different parts of Bulgaria and Europe travel to the Athos peninsula with the mission of helping completely voluntarily at Zograf Monastery. These volunteers, known as harizani, continue an extremely long tradition that has existed for 1200 years. Society often misunderstands their motives and looks for hidden financial interests behind their actions.

The participants in the journey are adamant that no financial compensation is offered at the monastery. Their main goal is to support the Bulgarian holy monastery while at the same time gaining enormous spiritual, rather than material, “kelipir”. This dedication attracts people from all over the world who wish to become part of preserving one of the brightest historical places for the country.

Escape from Stress and Grounding in the Holy Mountain

The world today is perceived as an extremely unfriendly place that burdens people with negativity and tension. A stay on Mount Athos provides a unique opportunity to quickly shake off everyday problems, work-related stress, and the dirt of daily life. A doctor who travels more than 3000 kilometers from Germany describes the monastery as the ideal clinic for spiritual problems.

This holy place helps visitors become grounded, return to their basic position, and find strength to face the challenges of the coming year. The participants share their belief that a truly faithful person does not suffer from depression and panic attacks because they feel God's support beside them. The energy of the peninsula is indescribable and leaves a deep mark on the consciousness for a lifetime.

Personal Searches and Prayer for Bulgaria’s Future

The group includes men with diverse professions and life paths, united by a common mission. An ecologist from Chirpan and a traveler from Varna, who has covered 800 kilometers, share their expectations of finding peace and answers to their inner struggles. These spiritual journeys provide space for reflection and closeness to Christian values.

Some of the pilgrims perceive their participation not only as a personal mission but also as a responsibility toward their homeland. One of the volunteers plans to attend all liturgies in order to pray for Bulgaria’s protection. He expresses disappointment that the nation is still not mature enough to cope on its own and hopes that his fellow citizens will open their eyes so they do not repeat old historical mistakes.

Features, Rules, and Connection with Nature

The ferry journey toward the first peninsula of Halkidiki also offers direct contact with beautiful nature. Passengers have the opportunity to feed seagulls directly from their hands while the birds fly around the vessel.

Characteristic Rules and Activities Description According to Participants
Voluntary Labor Unpaid assistance for maintaining Zograf Monastery without financial benefits.
Access to the Peninsula A strict ban on visits by women, which is a direct command from the Virgin Mary and should not be a subject of speculation.
Spiritual Practices Participation in church liturgies, prayers for personal peace, and for the well-being of the Bulgarian people.

The host calls on society to respect the established religious rules of Mount Athos, without seeking conflicts where deep meaning exists. The most important thing is realizing that there is a protected place where modern people can find the comfort and meaning they seek in order to move forward.
