Representatives of the Velichie party mark the 41st anniversary of the terrorist attack at Bunovo railway station, honoring the memory of the innocent victims and demanding an end to institutional lawlessness against the Bulgarian people.
The tragedy at Bunovo railway station and the list of innocent victims
Today marks 41 years since the terrorist act, commemorated in front of the monument to the seven people who lost their lives. At this place stand the rails twisted by the explosion, reminding visitors of the power of the time-bomb that detonated there. The victims of this senseless act were Georgi Tsvetanov, aged 12; Stefan Atanasov, aged 13; Yavorka Petrova, aged 38; Emil Nikolov, aged 40; Stilyan Ivanov, aged 60; Nikolay Genkov, aged 64; and Rayna Bozukova, aged 64. The tragedy left a deep mark on the national memory.
The plan for maximum destruction and the coordinated attack
The perpetrators placed the explosive device in a passenger carriage where mainly mothers with children were traveling. They planned for the bomb to explode in the nearby tunnel. The intention behind this plan was to cause a greater number of casualties because of panic, the lack of space for escape, and the shortage of air. Half an hour after the explosion at the station, another bomb detonated at the Sliven Hotel. The investigation established full coordination between the two attacks. These terrorist acts were a reaction to the assimilation campaign of 1984. As a result of the attacks, seven people were killed and nine others were seriously injured.
The position of the Velichie party against terror and killings
Members of the Velichie party laid a wreath in memory of the victims. They stated clearly that society remembers these events and will not allow them to happen again. The organization firmly rejects terrorism and every form of violence. Death caused by a terrorist attack is just as unjustified as actions by authorities that lead to the killing of their own people. The memory of the innocent victims requires an awakened conscience from the present generation.
Call for respect for the law and institutional change
The party issued a strong reminder to representatives of the state. Terror and atrocities against Bulgarians in any form must stop immediately. Every public official is obliged to follow the letter of the law rather than serve private interests. The current injustice in the country is destroying the future of the nation. The difference between historical terrorism and today’s lawlessness is small in its destructive effect. People demand a state that protects its citizens instead of subjecting them to constant pressure and abuse.
